The West Valley College Interior Design Club held its second annual Career Day on April 11, 2008. The purpose of this event is to empower interior design students to successfully transition from student to professional and provide them with practical information and tools necessary to secure an internship or gain employment.
The event was planned and presented by the collaborative efforts of student volunteers and industry professionals. About 100 students attended the workshops, panels and lectures. Students from CaƱada College, Monterey Peninsula College, and San Jose State University also participated. Design professionals mentored students on how to find success in their career paths.
The workshops provided students with useful insights to the industry and the competitive world on a variety of topics including Commercial, Residential, Kitchen & Bath, Sustainable, and Universal Design. The workshops also included portfolio reviews, resume writing, job search tips, and improving CAD skills. The guest speakers shared valuable advice with students on finding ways of advancing their credentials.
Speakers also advised students about the value of involvement in professional organizations such as ASID, NKBA, IIDA, USGBC as well as local interior design clubs. These organizations offer networking opportunities with future colleagues and employers which will enable a smooth transition from student to professional and help identify areas of interest.
The importance of work ethics, professional conduct and the overall responsibility of practicing in the design profession were highly emphasized. References were made to the code of ethics from ASID, NKBA, IIDA and USGBC. This resonated with what the program reinforces in the students at West Valley College.
A common thread in many of the workshops was the importance of education, experience and certification. Together, these provide a solid foundation for designing environments that are functional, safe, healthy and aesthetically pleasing. By sharing their own career paths, the speakers assured students that even though the journey may be long and multi-faceted it will lead to a fulfilling career.
